Special checking the presence of noroviruses and hepatitis A virus in frozen small fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries)
The audit has responded to the increased occurrence reporting system RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) in connection with an epidemic of hepatitis A in Ireland and Italy, where there was the likely source of the disease as indicated by small frozen berries. The samples were in addition to determining the presence of hepatitis A also examined for the presence of noroviruses, which are among the most important viruses that can spread through fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. In none of the 12 samples collected were demonstrated hepatitis A or norovirus.
